Behind the scenes of Aim High
After a pre-shoot interview with director Amohia Dudding, we inhaled some Malaysian (from the recently reopened Kopi Tiam in Newtown), and arrived at Wellington High around 8pm to find preparations for the evening’s shoot well-underway.
The make-up artists from Life Pharmacy (James Smith Corner) brought considerable skill to the transformation of the juniors, aided by the prosthetic and effects expertise of James and Eugene.
Cast and crew energy levels were kept high by Amohia’s boundless energy, supplemented by a potent cocktail of carbonated beverages, chips and confectionary.
The story
‘Boy’ and ‘Girl’ return to school late one night to retrieve their stash from a locker. Surprised by the grounds guards they hide in one of the school buildings and uncover a plot to raise academic standards.
The principal has been injecting students with an experimental serum to improve their grades—with unfortunate side-effects. Zombie hybrids now roam the school, cornering ‘Boy’ and ‘Girl’. Thinking on his feet ‘Boy’ calls for backup in the form of skaters, EMOs, goths, ninjas and jocks.
The scene is set for a showdown, but who will emerge triumphant?
(The film’s title is a riff on the Wellington High motto: ‘Aim High—Choose High’.)
